A new roof is one of the most essential and expensive improvements a homeowner can make. Whether our customers are seeking to prolong the life of their current roof or are enjoying a brand new roof installed professionally by our team, our experts at TTLC Inc. have put together a list of three tasks to help extend your roof's life and prevent severe damage before it occurs. 1. Inspect
- Inspect flashing around your chimney and vents. These areas are more likely to be exposed to leaks. Proper sealing and check-ups of these areas will prevent moisture from seeping into your roof and creating damage.
- Inspect your roof for shingles that are cracking, lifting, or missing. If you notice the roofing materials are damaged, we suggest repairing these areas as soon as possible to avoid additional damage to the exterior and interior of your home.
- Inspect the underside of your roof. Look for damage or staining as these indicate that the roof is leaking. Watermarks should determine where the leak is coming from and fixing it before more damage occurs.
2. Clean
- Keep your roof free from debris. Debris can hold moisture, which will deteriorate the roofing material over time. Debris can also prevent proper water flow off your roof, resulting in overflowing gutters and increased roof aging.
- Algae and fungus growth on the roof is a common problem. Cleaning these growths will help prevent damage, premature aging, and unsightly black streaking.
- Cleaning your gutters of debris, sticks, and leaves will keep water flow from overflowing your gutters. If your gutters become full or clogged, rainwater will spill over the top of the gutter and lower the roof areas. As the roof below is not built to handle this increased water flow, the roofing material will show wear and can develop leaks over time.
3. Remove
- Keep an eye on moisture pooling on the roof and eliminate any causes of water. Standing water is one of the fastest ways to ruin and shorten the life expectancy of a roof.
- If your home is hit with a massive snowstorm, removing the snow's weight will extend your roof's life. Removing snow prevents your roof from buckling due to the increased pressure and keeps your roofing material in good shape by avoiding long term moisture exposure as the snow melts.
- Tree branches that tend to grow over a roof should be removed. Removal will prevent the branches from breaking off and damaging your roof during a storm.
If you find any damage on your roof while you inspect, clean, or remove damaged elements from it, give the experts at TTLC Inc a call or contact us with our online form. We would be happy to evaluate your current roof and make suggestions for a repair or replacement.
